About the speaker: Dr Arzel is interested to unravel the mechanisms that drive wildlife population dynamic and their habitat choice in order to provide management and monitoring tools to managers and decision makers. Her research focuses on game species with special emphasis on Anatidae. She studied their ecology , from foraging ecology to habitat use, on their wintering, staging and breeding ground in Europe. She is an enthusiast wetland ecologist passionate about multi-stressor factors affecting the food web structure. She is studying the evolution of waterbird community, land-use and climate change in the Archipelago Sea based on an amazing 40 year bird survey database which she is helping to safeguard and share.

Dr Arzel is an Academy Research Fellow and PI of the project DiSRUPT - Ducks as Sentinels of endocRine disRUPTing chemicals in surface water funded by the Academy of Finland from 2020 to 2025.  DiSRUPT is an International effort to study the effect of Endocrine disruptive contaminants in ducks. She is also co-PI of the POOL project together with Petri Nummi and Aurélie Davranche funded by Kone Foundation (2022-2025). POOL gathers the expertise of a multidisciplinary team of researchers, artists and stakeholders to provide in depth knowledge and raise awareness on deficiently known seasonal wetlands in boreal forest ecosystems. POOL goal is to propose solutions to raise efficiency of natural management of forestry companies and wetland conservation. 

À propos de l'intervenant : Le Dr Arzel s'intéresse à la compréhension des mécanismes qui régissent la dynamique des populations d'animaux sauvages et leurs choix d'habitat afin de fournir des outils de gestion et de suivi aux gestionnaires et aux décideurs. Ses recherches portent sur les espèces de gibier, et plus particulièrement sur les anatidés. Elle a étudié leur écologie, de l'écologie alimentaire à l'utilisation de l'habitat, en passant par leurs aires d'hivernage, de repos et de reproduction en Europe. Écologue passionnée des zones humides, elle est passionnée par les facteurs multi-stress qui influencent la structure du réseau trophique. Elle étudie l'évolution des communautés d'oiseaux d'eau, l'utilisation des terres et le changement climatique dans la mer de l'Archipel, en s'appuyant sur une base de données exceptionnelle d'observation des oiseaux datant de 40 ans, qu'elle contribue à préserver et à partager. 

Le Dr Arzel est chercheuse à l'Académie et responsable du projet DiSRUPT - Ducks as Sentinels of endocRine disRUPTing chemicals in surface water, financé par l'Académie de Finlande de 2020 à 2025. DiSRUPT est un projet international visant à étudier l'effet des contaminants perturbateurs endocriniens sur les canards. Elle est également co-responsable du projet POOL, financé par la Fondation Kone (2022-2025), avec Petri Nummi et Aurélie Davranche. POOL réunit l'expertise d'une équipe multidisciplinaire de chercheurs, d'artistes et d'acteurs pour approfondir les connaissances et sensibiliser le public aux zones humides saisonnières mal connues des écosystèmes forestiers boréaux. L'objectif de POOL est de proposer des solutions pour accroître l'efficacité de la gestion naturelle des entreprises forestières et la conservation des zones humides.
